Business credit applications are complex and lengthy processes, partly due to the fact that information is generally incomplete in the first instance. Of course, hard-copy applications are the worst offenders because they have to be sent to the client, returned, then manually processed, not forgetting the inevitable back and forth in order to gather missing information and or signatures. And this is just the initial stage of the application: as yet, no financial analysis has been performed!

 

Once business credit applications have been processed they are typically archived as a digital document image or in a filing cabinet. Even when credit can be applied for online, these applications are still stored as PDF files. But, even though archived credit applications are attached to the account of the customer together with a credit bureau report and other relevant documents, the information is still not shared with other systems. When a business is running an automated online credit application, data such as contact information and other demographics is extracted electronically from the application in order to populate data fields in a Customer Master File. When there is integration with AR or CRM software, this automated step alone benefits other processes. Other data required for credit scoring models, like the year founded, financial status, the number of employees, and payment trends, is automatically extracted from public online sources, the application itself, or a credit bureau. Of course, all of this is a step in the right direction, but still more automation is required.

 

When a business credit application has been completed and automated interfaces have captured credit bureau data, this information can then be used to speed up the validation process. In addition to confirming that the applicant is who they say they are, vital demographic data is extracted from the application, then cross-checked with the credit bureau. Besides being part of the validation process, this also helps populate additional open fields on the credit application. The data required for the application of the customer can be further enriched because of the ability of the interface to automatically extract data from various sources. This information can then be added automatically to the master data files. It also means that corporate linkages can be extracted from credit bureaus and used as a means of identifying other attractive customers.

 

Therefore, by using the amazing power of the Internet , particularly with public companies, an enormous amount of information can be discovered to hasten the process of credit applications. Online business credit applications can be submitted with financial statements (or forwarded as a document image then converted to an electronic format using OCR technology), or, if it is public firm, captured from SEC filings.
